There comes a point when you must reach the conclusion, “kids will be kids.” As an example of the influence of parenting, my brother and I were both raised in the same house, had the same restrictions (curfew, no watching TV Sunday through Thursday, etc.), yet both had different ages at which we began having sex. While it is important, of course, to raise your children with a set of morals and values that you hope they hold as dear to their hearts as you do, it is also important to be pragmatic. Educating your children on why they should practice safe sex is just as important as any other life lesson you should try to instill. Kids will be kids. Part of the fun of breaking curfew was because it was against the rules. I suspect that having sex at a young age could be tied to this mindset as well. I’d rather have taught my children about the hows and whys of safe sex rather than to foolishly believe that they will wait until Mr. or Ms. Right comes along. (Although, monitoring and limiting their intake of lascivious television programming probably wouldn’t hurt, too.)
